Ear Candling

Ear candling is a modern form of this ancient procedure. We use tools such as specially hand-crafted candles to remove excess ear wax and apply therapeutic  herbal agents.

The spiral of the cone causes the smoke to be drawn downward into the ear canal.  This causes the ear canal to warm, and loosens the wax and other debris.  The candle flame and the  cone geometry then create a gentle vacuum that draws out this debris and often helps to relieve congestion.  As the candle burns, you may hear some crackling and hissing.  This is the normal sound of the candle at work.

Ear candling is soothing and relaxing, and you may experience a clearing of the sinuses, eustachian tubes and nasal passages.  Ear candling is ideal if you:

  • Have chronic wax buildup
  • Work outdoors or in dusty environments
  • Participate in water activities
  • Suffer ear-aches, sinus infections or allergies
  • Wish to apply herbal therapies as a health benefit

Do not elect ear candling if you have:

  • A recent ear surgery
  • Cysts or tumors in the ear
  • Mastoiditis in an acute stage
  • Ear drains (tubes)
  • A recent injury or damage to the ear

Frequently Asked Questions

Question: Is it possible for the wax to go back into the ear?

Answer: Proper supervision is the key. When properly applied, the candle’s wicking action effectively prevents the re-introduction of wax into the ear.  Reversal of wax flow can occur if the candle is burned at a steep incline, and it should be held at an angle no greater than 30-40 degrees while burning.  The candle should also not be burned beyond  50% of its length, and the head and hair should be shielded from the cone flame at all times. It is important to have your ear candling session supervised to assure that proper safeguards are maintained.

Question: Does ear candling hurt?

Answer: No.  If you experience any discomfort, make this known immediately.  Most people report a gentle warmth in the ear canal that has a relaxing and soothing effect.  However, because the candle is inserted into the ear, you may hear unfamiliar sounds. These are normal, and you should expect to feel some activity in the auditory canal.

Question: How long does a session last?

Answer: Sessions last about 45 minutes. Each candle is burned about 15 minutes, and they are done sequentially. You will also want to relax for 5-10 minutes after your session.

Question: How often should I do this?

Answer: This is variable.  People with established wax buildup  may want weekly sessions for 2-4 weeks.  Generally, 3-4 times per year is right for most people.
